NOJHL alumnus Appleby backstops Oshawa to Memorial Cup win
SUDBURY – Former Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League netminder Ken Appleby was instrumental in guiding the Oshawa Generals to the Memorial Cup Canadian Hockey League title Sunday night in Quebec City, Que.
Appleby efforts between the pipes saw named the Memorial Cup’s outstanding goaltender award, earning the Hap Emms Memorial Trophy.
The 20 year-old from North Bay recorded a 2.08 goals-against average along with a .915 save percentage, leading the Generals to a perfect 4-0 record, including a 2-1 overtime triumph vs. the Kelowna Rockets in the championship game Sunday.
Appleby was also named to the Memorial Cup all-star team in goal for his efforts.
During the course of the regular season he led all OHL stoppers in both goals-against average and save percentage at 2.08 and .924 respectively while tacking on a league-best 38 wins eventually backstopping to the Generals to an OHL title.
As a rookie, Appleby played in the NOJHL during the 2011-12 campaign for Kirkland Lake before moving on to the OHL.
The North Bay product also played for Team NOJHL at the 2011 Central Canada Cup Challenge.
