Campbell leads Cubs over Beavers

BLIND RIVER, Ont. – Sudbury Cubs forward Kyler Campbell scored three times to register his first Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League hat trick Saturday as he helped lead his side to a 5-2 triumph over the hometown Blind River Beavers at the Community Centre.

Neither squad would convert offensively in the first period as the two clubs hit the intermission still awaiting the night’s opening tally.

Coming out quickly in the second stanza though, Greater Sudbury struck twice in the opening minutes.

Campbell collected the first one for the visitors as he came out of a crowd on the left side and beat Blind River goalkeeper Jeremi Delaquis.

It was more Campbell on the next shift as he notched another by taking a Graeme Silen feed from behind the net and promptly whipping in his second of the match-up.

Adding to their lead, Alexander Dillon finished off a Pineshish Whiteduck feed from in close after the puck was not able to be controlled by a Beavers’ defender.

The hosts cut into the deficit past the midway mark of the contest compliments of Meguire Naughton to make it 3-1.

Blind River added another, moments later, when Jesse Dupuis tipped in an Ethan Pegg wrister from the middle, just inside the blueline.

In the final frame though, Campbell finished off his three-goal performance as he came down the left wing and fired a shot that Delaquis could only get a piece of before it slid across the goal line for his NOJHL-leading eighth of the season.

They then saw Jaxon Bedard convert just over a minute later to put the Cubs up by three while Pierson Sobush secured the road triumph for Greater Sudbury in the back half of the session to round out the night’s scoring.

Shots on goal favoured the Beavers by a 49-33 count with Joel Rainville getting the win while Delaquis suffered the loss.
