Beavers come through in must-win game vs. Rapids

BLIND RIVER, Ont. – Facing a must-win situation, the Blind River Beavers came through in a big way as they defeated the French River Rapids 9-5 in a Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League contest Sunday afternoon at the Blind River Community Centre.

With the result, Blind River now trails the Espanola Express by three points in the race for the final playoff spot in the league’s West Division.

Sean Paterson opened the scoring for the Beavers 5:22 into the contest before Jason Uhl and Paterson again made it 3-0 before the game was 12 minutes old.

French River got one back thanks to Caleb Rich before the first was complete.

Blind River was quick to strike to begin the second stanza as Max Khull connected just 10 seconds into the period.

The Rapids’ Bret McInall had one on the powerplay four minutes into the session only to see the Beavers notch markers Justin Philips and Uhl 42 seconds apart to go up 6-2.

McInall supplied his second of the afternoon and team-leading 20th overall at 16:15, but Blind River answered by tacking on two more before the period was done thanks to Alex Kidd and Ted Davis.

The final frame saw French River’s Quinn Robelle and the Beavers’ Cole Murray both find the back of the net before the Rapids’ Eric Paquette wrapped up the day’s scoring at 17:53 for his second of the campaign.

Paterson, Kidd and Troy Murray supplied two assists apiece while Matthew Murray doled out four helpers for Blind River in the victory.

Martin Miloslavich registered the win for the Beavers making 27 saves along the way.
