NOJHL names its Eastlink TV 3 Stars of the week

SUDBURY, Ont. – The Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League announced Monday that goaltender Thomson Phinney of the Blind River Beavers along with forwards Nick Smith of the Soo Thunderbirds and Christian Snyder of the Kirkland Lake Gold Miners have been named its Eastlink TV 3 Stars of the Week for the period ending Oct. 7.

THOMSON PHINNEY, (G) BLIND RIVER BEAVERS – In two starts last week, the recently acquired netminder won both of them backstopping Blind River to a pair of road victories.

The 18-year-old from Halifax, N.S., began with a 37-save performance Friday as the Beavers rallied to win 3-2 at Elliot Lake.

He then followed that up Saturday with 29 stops in a 3-1 triumph over the Soo Eagles.

Since joining the club late last month, Phinney has gone 3-0 with a 1.67 goals-against average and a .950 save percentage.

NICK SMITH, (F) SOO THUNDERBIRDS – Surging Sault Ste. Marie remained unbeaten in part due to Smith’s efforts over the weekend.

Skating for his hometown Sault Ste. Marie squad, Smith opened with his third multi-point night of the season with a goal and two assists as the Thunderbirds defeated Espanola Saturday.

Sunday night he scored once more helping the Soo improve to 9-0 with a home ice win over Elliot Lake.

Having tallied in four straight outings, the 19-year-old is playing at over a point-per-game pace for the Thunderbirds to date with six markers and five helpers to his credit in nine contests.

CHRISTIAN SNYDER, (F) KIRKLAND LAKE GOLD MINERS – The 18-year-old New Lenox, Ill., product chipped in with five assists during the time frame aiding in a trio of Kirkland Lake triumphs.

Snyder too is playing at a point-per-game clip with 10 in as many games as he scored three times and helped set-up seven others for the Gold Miners.

His team is also 6-0 in match-ups in which he registered at least one point.
