Doak posts shutout, Liarakos tallies twice as Blind River bests Elliot Lake
BLIND RIVER, Ont. – The Blind River Beavers rode the shutout goaltending of netminder of Aidan Doak while Yianni Liarakos tallied twice to help them top the Elliot Lake Wildcats 3-0 Saturday in Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League play at the Blind River Community Centre.
Liarakos started things off by registering his league-leading 11th game-winning goal of the season 16:27 into the contest.
The Beavers then came right back and added another 51 seconds later on a Dylan McMahon effort.
Action in the middle stanza saw Liarakos strike late to provide his second of the evening and 36th of the season in the final moments of the stanza to round out the night’s scoring.
Doak and a solid Blind River defensive effort did the rest in the final frame in the blanking of the Wildcats.
Max Khull chipped in with two assist to aid the winner’s cause.
The shutout was Doak’s third of the year while Elliot Lake goaltender Matt Kostiw faced 24 shots in defeat.
With the result the Beavers extended their franchise record for wins in a single campaign to 31.
They’ll conclude the regular season Sunday afternoon in Espanola at 2 p.m. as they take on the Express at the Regional Recreation Complex before moving on the playoffs where they will meet the Rayside-Balfour Canadians in a best-of-seven West Division semifinal.
Elliot Lake finishes fifth in the NOJHL West with a 23-26-4-3 record and will take on the No. 4 Soo Eagles in a best-of-three divisional quarter-final match-up.
