Cunningham’s buzzer-beater lifts Timmins past Blind River in 2nd OT
TIMMINS, Ont. – A Bain Cunningham goal just before time expired lifted the Timmins Rock to a dramatic 5-4 double overtime win over the Blind River Beavers Friday in an action-packed Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League contest at McIntyre Arena.
Timmins took the lead late in the first period as Stewart Parnell’s picked up his seventh goal of the season at 18:27.
The home side then went up by two early in the second thanks to Dean Kiriacou only to see Mark Khull put the Beavers on the board at 5:13.
Special teams helped the Rock get that back as Tyler Romain scored on the power play at 9:11.
Battling back, Blind River struck twice 77 seconds apart in the latter stages of the session to knot the affair at 3-3 on efforts by Dylan McMahon and Zac Lambrecht.
The Beavers added another while on a man advantage at four minutes into the third Max Khull, but Cory Sprague’s 18th forced extra time with 2:20 left in regulation.
After a scoreless first OT, Cunningham proved to be the hero on the night as his late attempt found its way in before time ran out in the contest to give Timmins the win and the second point on the night.
Nicholas Hautanen had two assists for the Rock in the triumph.
Jeff Veitch made 29 saves to register the decision for the Rock while Myles Hektor faced 47 shots in the setback for the Beavers.
